Welcome to Heart speaks to Heart - a meditation in words and music based on a selection of the spiritual writings of Blessed John Henry Newman.
The title “Heart speaks to Heart” is a translation of Cor ad Cor loquitur, the motto Newman chose to put on his coat of arms when made a cardinal in 1879. I am indebted to Lawrence S Cunningham for his volume of the same name from which I have selected extracts of Newman’s writings, concentrating on Newman the preacher, priest and spiritual writer.
I am equally indebted to Archbishop Bernard Longley, the recently appointed Archbishop of Birmingham (Newman’s own diocese) who narrates this CD.
John Henry Newman translated a number of “Office Hymns” – those used for Divine Office (The Liturgy of the Hours) – into poetic English, which are used as a framework for this meditation. Please therefore join us in an imaginary “spiritual day” with John Henry Newman.
