Notes/Reviews

Magnificat  - This setting is aimed to be a meditation on the Magnificat. It is set for a soprano solo with a very simple accompaniment of either alto, tenor & bass voices or organ. The music aims to reflect some of the joy and wonder expressed by Our Lady on hearing the news that she is to give birth to the Son of God; whilst also bearing in mind the extraordinary nature of her total trust in God the Father.

The piece has received two reviews on SibeliusMusic.com.

"Worth looking at this one..."
Jeremy de Satge has achieved his aim to write an approachable choral setting here. Provided one is equipped with a solo soprano of some aptitude and range, most choirs will be able to sustain the simple backdrop of a repeated four part figure in plainsong style which runs throughout the piece. A simple device, but effective. (Hannah Bell, 2001)

"A magnificat for all!"
The simplicity of this work has great appeal and makes it approachable for choirs of varying abilities. The vocal accompaniment uses repetition and is meditative in style. This contrasts effectively with the solo soprano line which is far more expansive and technically demanding. Jeremy de Satge's obvious understanding of the human voice shines through here. The voice is allowed to soar and has a freedom akin to plainsong. This is a deeply spiritual work and worthy of inclusion in church and cathedral repertoire. (Jane Money, 2001)

Magnificat for Soprano Solo is also included on our CD, Regina Caeli, and may be listened to in MP3 format by clicking on the links below. [NB Depending on the speed of your Internet connection, downloading the mp3 file may take up to 1 minute - your patience will be rewarded!]
