Notes Diptych - The level of expression within these two motets should never approach the grandiose. While fully exercising the indicated dynamics, there should always remain an overriding sense of meditative and contained intensity. The pieces can be performed either together or separately. A Song aims to evoke the phrase structure of Gregorian chant. Therefore, rubato, breaths and phrases can and should take into account individual performers and surroundings. The sense of metre is here to be avoided. These pieces have also been arranged for two horns, organ and strings.
